Description

A functome is the whole set of functional entities in a cell, tissue, organ, organism, and species. Functomics is the scientific discipline of studying the functional entities in biological cells.

Discussion

Functomics encompasses enzymes, cells, and higher level of biological entities and functions. The functome is usually used in the context of enzyme functions. However, the discipline is broadening to encompass other aspects of biological functions.

Functome is the next step after metabolome and regulome. It represents biological functions rather than chemicals of cells. A whole metabolic pathway can therefore be an example of a functomic entity. Mapping the functome leads to gene ontology and the understanding of biological entities.
