C O N T E N T SSee AlsoDescriptionIn human genetics, Haplogroup F is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. Haplogroup F is centered in Asia and appears in eastern China and Japan. It is a descendant haplogroup of Haplogroup R. Origins and distributionHaplogroup F is one of the founding East Asian lineages, and is thought to have arisen on the high plains of Central Asia, between the Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal. Along with haplogroups B and M, it comprises 75% of all current mitochondrial lineages in the region.
Spread of haplogroup F. (Source) Haplogroup F makes up over a quarter of the current population of Southeast Asians, and appears in Fillipino and aboriginal Taiwanese populations. It ranges from as far north as the Evenks of central Siberia to the Kadazan of Borneo, in decreasing frequency distribution the further the distance from Southeast Asia. This haplogroup is found in some coastal populations of Papua New Guinea, possibly spreading across Southeast Asia during the expansion of Sino-Tibetan languages, around 6,000 to 8,000 years ago.
