Description

The red cell enzyme malate dehydrogenase is an enzyme in the citric acid cycle that catalyzes the conversion of malate into oxaloacetate (using NAD) or pyruvate (using NADPH but malic enzyme does this not malate dehydrogenase), and vice versa (this is a reversible reaction).

Discussion

Several alleles are known but most populations are uniformly homozygous for one allele SMDH1. Most other alleles are very rare but one is present in high frequency in numerous New Guinea populations.(1)
